The Tragedy Of The Four Girls
by Ze'ev Schurmann
I wrote this many many years ago. It's Chapter 1 of a longer story that I want to turn into a novella, but I am not sure people would want to read it. At the end I will put a footnote about where I intend to take it if I do decide to turn it into a novella.
Mildred, Leah, Angie, and Ella grew up as best friends right from grade one. They were inseparable. They all had a good upbringing, went to a good school.
During high school, Mildred was a big party girl, Leah was mostly about her books, Angie was super religious and Ella, well Ella was known as the school bicycle. All the guys that went out on dates with her would talk about how easily she put out. She didn't mind, she thrived on the attention.
When it came to the matric dance night, the girls all had the top four boys in the Rugby team escort them to the dance. They had a magical evening and after the dance, went down to a local night club near the beach for the after-party. The girls all decided to be adventurous and when the boys offered them each an ecstasy tablet, they took it. The evening went on, and they were having fun and nobody wanted the night to end.
Ella's date had never been out with her before, and after a while he suggested they head down to the beach for a walk. She agreed and off they went. While they were walking along the beach her date kept pressuring her into "getting it on" if you know what I mean. But she refused. She explained to him that she was actually a virgin and all the rumours about her were false, that she had declined each and every guy, and that is why no one ever took out twice. But boys being boys, they all want to look like the "big man" and tell the bros that they scored, and it got her a lot of attention with the boys and she loved the attention so she just let the stories go.
Meanwhile, Angie was having a bad experience one her ecstasy trip and started freaking out. Her date took her outside for fresh air. But she kept freaking out more and more, and eventually, she started attracting attention so he bailed and left her unattended. People started coming to her aid, but she was so freaked out at this point, she got up and ran across the road.
Oblivious to their friends, Mildred and Leah were partying hard, and when they heard of a house party happening not too far away, off they went with their guys. The party had loud music, loads of booze and loads of drugs. The night was well under-way for these two young girls and Mildred introduced Leah to her first line of cocaine.
Ella lay on the beach. When she woke up she went home with no knowledge of what really happened. She walked all the way home, she felt dirty, but she didn't know why. When she got home, she snuck in, got in the shower and cried.
The paramedic asked Angie if they can call her parents. She looked at the man. He looked at her and saw the fear in her eyes. "I am..." he murmured. "Sorry?" replied the paramedic. The man paused, "I am her father. Please just help her. I have money. I can pay for everything." The paramedics put Angie's legs in splints and loaded her into the ambulance while the police took a statement from the man. When the ambulance left, he followed to the hospital.
Leah came back down the stairs and Mildred looked at her in disgust, "How could you do that?" "How could I do what?" "Sex for money! How could you?" "It's no big deal! And I have a thousand bucks. Besides, it didn't take them long and they wore rubbers." Mildred didn't know what to make of it. "Have you done this before?" "Nope," Leah downed a drink, "the first time." "First time for what? Having sex or getting paid." "Both, besides, you've had sex before..." "But I didn't get paid!" "Well, why not? These boys have mommy and daddy's money, we have what they want, so we take their money. Come on, loosen up. It's easy money." Leah walked up to another guy and started chatting with him. Within a few minutes, she was on her way upstairs with him.
"What happened to your face?" asked Ella's mother as she came into the kitchen. "I fell." "When, where, how? Your face looks terrible..." "Mom it's fine. I got drunk last night, slipped and rolled down some stairs. It's no big deal." "Well, I hope you learned your lesson then. I hate the fact that you drink like your father. You know that's what killed him, right?" "Please don't bring dad into this. I just want to get my cereal and go back to my room." Ella's mother kissed her on the forehead. "You know I worry about you. One day a guy is going to hurt you and I don't know what I will do." Ella poured her cereal into a bowl, added milk and sugar, grabbed a spoon and went back to her room.
Angie woke up in the hospital. The man was sleeping in the chair next to her bed. She was so scared of her parents finding out. She pushed the button for the nurse, the noise woke the man. The nurse came into the room and asked if everything was okay. She pressed the button to stop the bell. "I..." said Angie before she was interrupted by the man. "Everything is fine, my daughter needs to rest. Sorry to bother you. Thank you." Angie looked at the man. He took her hand and said "You don't need to worry. I will look after you. After all, it is my fault you are here." "My parents..." she started to say. "...will never find out. I paid for everything and gave them a fake name." "What name did you give them?" "My wife's." A tear started to well in the corner of his eye. "Did I say something wrong?" "No... it's just..." Angie looked for a wedding ring. "My wife died 15 years ago. Cancer. But when I knocked you in the road this morning, you looked just like her on the day we met. It was like she had come back from the dead." He took out his wallet and pulled out an old tatty sepia photo from his wedding day. Angie looked at the photo. It was like she was looking into a mirror.
"So how much?" "R6500" "Slut!" "Fuck you... you are stupid for not getting in on this." "Okay, so how many guys was it then?" "13." Mildred spat her coffee out. "13? Are you fucking stupid." "It's no big deal. They all wore condoms and they were all done really fast." Leah waved the stack of cash in front of Mildred. "Six thousand and five hundred... at this rate, I can buy a new car." "Tell you what... let's go to the mall, I will buy us some clothes and we can then go to the salon and get the full treatment." "I am inviting Angie and Ella. And I still think you are crazy." Mildred picked up her phone and sent a text message to Angie and Ella.
So this is chapter one and is the night life completely changes for each of the four girls. Angie gets kidnapped and held prisoner by the man. Ella ends up being pregnant, has an abortion and ends up suicidal from the guilt. Leah becomes a prostitute and ends up a drug addict. Mildred is the only one that survives the story, but ends up broken because of what happens to her three friends. So what do you think? Should I work on developing it further?
